Volume IV. Week of January 24, 2008

Welcome to Volume Four of the Liberation Music Newsletter...

Happy New Year! Four weeks into 2008... Don't good things always come in Fours? Of course! And welcome to the fourth transmission of the Liberation Music Newsletter ... speaking of which, the Fab Four will be Liberating their way onto VH1 Classic in a new doc with Rare & Unseen footage of John, Paul, George and Ringo (and others, including Genesis Drummer/Singer Phil Collins and oft forgotten Beatles drummer Colin Hanton) ...Everybody's favorite NYC dance punks Radio 4 will be taking time off recording tracks for an upcoming Tim Robbins film to play a gig at Brooklyn's Studio B on 1/25. No comment from the PIL camp... Gang of Four promise to hit the road soon, and one look at my iPod tells me that there's a whole new breed of Math Rock & Post Rock practitioners who owe these lads from Leeds some royalty checks... so score some fours for seven years or whatever -but don't forget to vote in the primaries, should you get the chance. Like Paul Weller always says, "Mod helps those who help themselves!" Now That's Entertainment...

- Libby, the Liberator

Matt's Pagoda > Fave unsigned band this issue:

Bonde do Role - Unfortunately they're unsigned because they just broke up. This Brazilian Funk Carioca band fronted by female fireball Marina, were the best thing going until about a month ago when she parted ways with Pedro and Gorky on the eve of an Australian tour. A little bit M.I.A., and a little bit Polly Styrene, Marina (Gasolina) rocked the mic with filthy Portuguese rhymes that would make 2 Live Crew blush. The background vibe is an organic cross of Garage, Reggaeton, and Mash-up that mixes smoothly from Alice in Chains to Zapp with enough class and dazzle to rival Girl Talk and Edan! Domino released the only two of their albums that I'm aware of...

Fave movement of the moment:
Scandinavian Indie Rock
The Norwegians own Black Metal, and the Icelanders own post-rock. The Swedes have taken over punk rock –just look what The Refused did for new-style hardcore with The Shape of Punk to Come, and what The Hellacopters & Backyard Babies did for retro-stoner, garage punk!  But unbeknownst to most, the Danes and Finns have been battling it out over who shall reign supreme in the realm of Indie Rock for quite a while now. Mew, Kashmir, Carpark North, Superheroes, Spleen United and EPO-555 have all at one time or another drifted in or out of the offices of Denmark's Crunchy Frog Records, but just a stone's throw away in Finland, bands like Lapko and Disco Ensemble are throwing down the gauntlet and making some great music, too. This is a battle I'd be happy to view from the sidelines for a good long time... Zookeeper's Boy has been in my iPod top ten for almost a year now...

LAST WEEK IN MUSIC HISTORY:
LibMusic
On January 24, 1941 Aaron Neville was born in New Orleans and Neil Diamond was born in... Brooklyn? And he's the Jazz Singer? ...In 1962 Brian Epstein signed a 25% (ie highway robbery) management deal with the Beatles, while the going rate was 10%, in this particular instance, I think he was worth every shilling.

ALBUM COVER OF THE WEEK:

naked city John ZornNaked City
First of all, the image is a photograph titled "Murder in Hell's Kitchen" by Weegee. Arthur Fellig's alias has become synonymous with crime photography, and this image not only singularly epitomizes his groundbreaking work, but is also highly indicative of the music to be found on this John Zorn project, which is a collection of thrash/jazz interpretations of classic noir themes that still pushes the envelope now, almost twenty years after it's release. This record was released on Elektra's Nonesuch label, but Zorn has since established his own label dedicated to wonderfully eclectic artists and genres called Tzadik. Many of the releases on that label are designed by a very talented artist named Heung-Heung Chin, whose work is bound to be spotlighted in a future edition of this very feature.
